We at the Northwest Wind Symphony would like to thank The Chronicle for their amazing article on our upcoming 2014-2015 season!

Carrina Stanton, freelancer, authored the article, exploring prejudices in music – particularly, the prejudices musicians sometimes have against their own art form. She captured great quotes from our conductor and music director Dr. Dan Schmidt. Photos of two of our flutists were taken by Pete Caster as the duo performed on the streets of  downtown Centralia on Girls’ Night Out to raise awareness for NWWS.

We want to thank Chantel Wilson, Life Editor, for taking our theme for this season and finding a great story angle.

The article ran in the Saturday, October 18, 2014 edition of the paper. If you missed it then, here’s your second chance.

Centralia, WA – The Northwest Wind Symphony opens its 24th season on Saturday, November 1, with a fall concert titled, “Just Different!” The concert takes place at Corbet Theatre at 7pm and will feature the widest variety of concert music the group has played to date.

“We all have our quirks, our opinions,” said Dan Schmidt, Conductor. “When we come across something or someone that, in our opinion, is just out of place, we often form a quick opinion, which can grow into a prejudice.” Dr. Schmidt went on to note the unique qualities of the music to be performed, including a modern arrangement of “America,” a funk tune for concert band, and melodies from Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess.”

NWWS musicians come all over Western Washington, traveling between 10 minutes and 3 hours to meet on the Centralia College campus for a day-long rehearsal. Many are music teachers, and all are volunteers. “It’s important to continue the tradition of providing live, high-caliber concert music,” said Dane Hurd, Executive Director. “Concert attendance keeps the NWWS alive, providing a way for talented musicians to give music back to the community.”

Founded in 1991, the NWWS enjoys presenting theme-based concerts and frequently features guest artists and conductors. Ticket sales and donations fund service expenses such as concert hall and sheet music rentals. Tickets may be purchased for $12 at the door or in advance at Book ‘n’ Brush in Chehalis. Students are free with paying adult. For more information on the current concert season, visit www.northwestwindsymphony.org.
